You may remember that I was in Australia over the summer. And I have to say, looking back at my photos still gives me post-travel depression. To combat my FOMO from everything Oz, I thought I’d share a few of my Melbourne favorites. These are the things you definitely won’t want to miss if you visit. Or, you know, if you happen to live there and want to be a tourist for a day.
1️⃣ Go to the Great Ocean Road!
Technically outside of Melbourne, but it’s one thing you seriously have to do. Of course, if you’ve already planned a trip to Melbourne, and it isn’t on your list yet, you must be crazy. It has some of the best ocean views in Australia (along with all the other cool stops there are along the way).
2️⃣ Visit the National Gallery of Victoria (and ACMI).
When I was in Melbourne last year, these two museums had some really cool exhibits: MoMA and Alice in Wonderland. I have to say, I’m not usually one for museums, but I loved both of these. While the exhibits are always changing, you can be sure it will always be something amazing.
3️⃣ Soak up the sun at Brighton Beach.
I know you’ve heard of the famous beach boxes, and they are just bright and colorful in person. And if you’re there in the summer (remember, opposite of us in the U.S.), you’ll get to enjoy a hot day by the water.
4️⃣ Scout out the best street art.
Melbourne is a known for a lot of things, but one of the big ones is the city’s fond attitude towards street art. I suggest you hop on the train to Flinders St. – one of the coolest stations in the city – and scout out the best streets from there. There’s always new art to see, so make sure you capture the moment before it’s gone.
5️⃣ Catch a game.
Not only goes Melbourne have some of the best stadiums, but the arenas also have some of the best city views. I suggest you buy some memorabilia and cheer on the local team. Even if you don’t get into sports, especially with the different rules of Australian football, it’ll be a game to remember.
Best of all, there is always something going on in Melbourne.
It was one of my favorite things about the city when I lived there. Most of my weekends were spent scrolling through the Facebook events of the week for the best festivals and celebrations. While only doing my top 5 things not to miss leaves out some other incredible things about the city, at least you now have a starting point for a fun adventure.
Did I miss one of your favorite Melbourne sights? Leave a comment and let me know what you want to see added to the list!
Hope to visit one day! Thanks for the tips!
